What kind of lubricant is safe to use on the rubber o-ring? I know Vaseline deteriorates rubber Would a silocone lube be ok, or can I used cooking oil Crisco, OR do I need to go buy some Plumbers Grease? I've read all different answers to similar questions on the plumbing forums

You could use vaseline, it should be safe, I use it for putting backgrounds on my tanks Although, you could try running the air tube under some real warm hot water, to soften the plastic so it'll stretch easier, then, once it's on and cools off, it should shrink and seal real nice
