Hi jagabo, thanks for the really quick response Once I've downloaded either of these will a media player, e g Windows Media player automatically detect the codec or is there something else I have to do, such as locate the codec and put into a folder?

XviD is my only consideration for MPEG-4 encoding The codec is rock solid, and performs like a dream Most people who have issues with green macroblocking, glitchy playback, have installed codec packs full of dll's they don't need, to decode media streams they'll never play

To be honest, XviD is becoming a little dated, H 264 seems to be the codec of choice nowadays You may even find you get better results using x264 at a basic setting than you would from XviD at a high quality setting

I installed Handbrake 0 9 3, selected as input an MP4 file with H 264 video and AAC audio As output I Selected AVI as container, video mpeg4(xvid) and audio MP3

I converted a 1 hour, 2 7gb dvd movie to both an mp4 xvid and a h264 mpeg (both to 720 by 480) and the quality of the H264 was significantly better The file size for the xvid was 252mb and for the h264 was 254mb so almost the same file size for a lot better quality for the h264
